ABOUT US

Sanctuary Village is a future tiny house community designed and built with the express purpose of alleviating housing insecurity for those looking to transition out of homelessness.

OUR MISSION

Sanctuary Village provides people without housing, with transitional tiny homes within communities of care, advocacy, and equitable access to resources to empower their life choices.

OUR
VISION

Sanctuary Village’s vision is a world in which all people have equitable access to supportive community, safe housing, and resources to meet basic human needs, with the agency to create their best life with dignity and acceptance.

OUR VALUES

At Sanctuary Village the overarching principle of servant leadership, namely the belief and philosophy of putting others first, guides our adoption of the following values, that bind our HEARTS into community:

  • Honesty (trust): We strive to always speak truth, act with integrity and authenticity, and encourage the same from our partners. We believe honesty is necessary for healthy decision making and creating trust in community.

  • Empowerment (impact: We exist to make a difference in people’s lives. We acknowledge and seek to expand people’s agency over their lives and decisions. Our impact comes from eliminating barriers and supporting others along their journey.

  • Accountability: We will hold ourselves to the highest ethical standards, we will honor our commitments, and we will strive for excellence in all that we do.

  • Respect (empathy, community): We value and celebrate the unique and diverse talents, experiences, voices, and perspectives of every person and therefore treat all with sensitivity and thoughtfulness.

  • Teamwork (collaboration): We believe we cannot do this important work alone. We rely on and trust the collective input of our residents, partners, donors, and each other. The capacity and competency that we have when we work together far exceeds what any one has alone.

  • Servant leadership: We believe leadership requires a service focus.  Power does not exist for its own sake but for the benefit of others. We lead to promote the interests of others before our own.

  • Housing  – individual transitional tiny homes for people experiencing chronic homelessness

  • Community of Care – a living and working environment connected to the wider community where everyone looks out for each other, taking an interest in the total well being (physical, emotional, health, and safety) of all community members

  • Client Directed Services – case management and support services promoting autonomy and agency delivered in partnership with resident goals and priorities

  • Education/Advocacy – provide resources, training and support to residents to help restore agency and autonomy; proactively engage with community members, organizations, and residents to share learnings and dispel myths and stereotypes associated with homelessness; and work with local and state officials to promote policies that support individuals experiencing homelessness

WHY TINY HOUSES

While traditional homeless shelters are generally cheaper to construct than conventional low-income housing units, they rank on par with the streets as a living preference because shelters often enforce strict rules and do not include private space. A transitional tiny house village offers a cost-effective means for providing intermediate shelter option while preserving individual autonomy, privacy, and responsibility. Sanctuary Village is a 501c3 that was created to offer an efficient and effective way to address chronic street homelessness by creating a village of tiny houses. Our tiny houses will provide for the residents’ basic needs— stability, security, privacy, and the ability to stay warm and dry—are met; a vast improvement from being without any shelter. The houses will be 8 feet x 12 feet with a 4-foot porch. Several will be ADA- accessible.
